What are the differences between UX design and UI design?
If there is one subject on which many people make misunderstandings, it is design in the digital sector. Between the web designer, the graphic designer, the 3D designer, the motion designer... the professions involved in web design projects in the broad sense are so numerous and varied that it is easy to get lost. We will focus on digital design, focusing on UX (User Experience) and UI (User Interface) design... and above all define the differences between these two notions.
Definition of UX design: what is it?
UX design, or user experience design, is the art of designing user-centered products. Its goal is to provide smooth and seamless experiences, focusing on user emotions, needs and behaviors. This process involves deeply understanding users and their behaviors, creating optimized journeys, and ensuring that every interaction with the product is as intuitive and enjoyable as possible. The main goal of UX design is to ensure user satisfaction by providing an engaging and effective experience.
Definition of UI design: what is it?
What are the differences between UI and UX?
The differences between UX and UI design are important to understand when designing a digital product, so as not to make a mistake about the resources to mobilize for your project. UX design focuses on the overall user experience, while UI design focuses on the appearance and interactivity of the interface. UX design is more focused on psychology, research and analysis of user behavior, which can be analyzed with third-party tools today (Google Analytics, Matomo etc.), while UI design focuses on emphasis on the visual aesthetics and ease of use of interfaces, the effectiveness of which can be analyzed with specific heatmap tools (Hotjar for example).
As you will have understood, UX concerns the user experience while UI concerns the visual appearance and ease of interaction.
Which professions are dedicated to UI and UX?
UX design professionals occupy positions such as UX designers, but also user experience researchers, information architects and user experience designers. Their role is to understand user needs, design appropriate journeys and guarantee a smooth and satisfactory experience. In contrast, UI designers, often called interface designers, are responsible for translating needs into attractive and functional visual designs. These two fields interact closely, collaborating to create comprehensive and effective digital products.
Some web designers subsequently specialize in either UI or UX, or even both. But if you are looking to recruit resources in this area, keep in mind to clearly specify your needs on the job description. You should not think that a graphic designer will be able to carry out all the requests relating to a project: in reality these are very distinct professions, with specific skills.
