Biodiversity constitutes a web, a mesh of living beings on which we are interdependent. Their arrangements and entanglements weave the habitability of the planet which is now threatened. This encourages us to reconsider the diversity of living beings as roommates with whom we must cohabit to create the habitability of the Earth together.

This is where Zoepolis’ research comes into play.

The challenge is twofold, on the one hand ecological issues call for reinventing human organizations and on the other hand, we are called upon to consider, in design practices and in society, new non-human actors.

The challenge is twofold, on the one hand ecological issues call for reinventing human organizations and on the other hand, we are called upon to consider, in design practices and in society, new non-human actors.

In collaboration with research centers, private and public organizations, Zoepolis extends the fields of design to other living beings, develops new methodologies and opens new imaginations for the world of tomorrow. From the exploration of new relationships with living things to “uncomfortable coalitions”, the practice of designers reinvents itself at the boundaries between human and non-human worlds.

Independent designer and researcher, Nicolas ROESCH, has supervised European projects and research programs. He was awarded the designer residency in Dubai in 2012.

After 15 years in innovation through design and uses, design research, notably at the Cité du Design, he created Zoepolis in 2021 to extend his discipline to non-human living things. Today, it supports public and private actors, local authorities and research centers (CNRS, INRAE, IRD). He teaches his research at universities and colleges in various disciplines on the issues of the Anthropocene and our relationships with living things and past, present and future biodiversity.
