Sustainable Design Focus - Rethinking recycling and waste reduction at source
Focus on Sustainable Design is a conference program designed to enrich our School's culture in the area of sustainable design. It invites renowned scientists, eco-explorers, experts, designers, and architects to share their experiences, visions, and work on the subject.
For this first semester, we are pleased to present four conferences that will highlight innovative and inspiring approaches on biomimicry, health, food, the circular economy, and low tech.
Flore Berlinguen
Rethinking recycling and waste reduction at source
Flore Berlingen,, a Sciences Po graduate and former president of Zero Waste France, challenges our belief that recycling our waste is systematic. Her research reveals that end-of-life recovery processes are far from being as simple as we might imagine, for economic, technical, and political reasons.
For design students, Flore's ideas are essential for developing more efficient and realistic waste management strategies. Without questioning the circular economy or waste sorting, she warns against a form of credulity: it is crucial to be well informed about the sectors and organizations in place to handle the end-of-life of our products and packaging.
Flore will share principles for avoiding this often insoluble final clutter. Her goal is not to blame the circular economy, but to remind us that it cannot be a one-size-fits-all solution, as that would be unrealistic. She encourages designers to adopt reflexes that preserve resources and limit environmental impacts.
