Sustainable Design Focus - Robustness, the third way of life
Focus on Sustainable Design is a conference program designed to enrich our School's culture in the area of sustainable design. It invites renowned scientists, eco-explorers, experts, designers, and architects to share their experiences, visions, and work on the subject.
For this first semester, we are pleased to present four conferences that will highlight innovative and inspiring approaches on biomimicry, health, food, the circular economy, and low tech.
Olivier Hamant
Robustness, the third way of life
Olivier Hamant, a biology researcher at INRAE and president of the Michel Serres Institute, proposes a radical shift in our approach to design, drawing inspiration from the natural world. He argues that, unlike humans who worship performance, nature favors robustness, which allows it to withstand severe environmental fluctuations such as droughts, floods, and storms. This form of resilience has enabled living things to overcome every climatic challenge in Earth's history.
For designers, he suggests moving away from this quest for performance, which can lead to a fragmentation of our society. His research in biology has allowed him to learn lessons from living things and outline a different way of inhabiting the planet.
Olivier Hamant is a key figure in the scientific world. He infuses science and technology with a biomimetic vision of society that is unique, positive, and deeply inspiring for design.
